BIS Lite and Twitter Part 2

We have discussed about updating Twitter from Google Talk earlier and now I will share my idea of using  BIS Lite (Emails and Chat) to get Twitter updates.

Why am I doing this while you could just simply pay for full BlackBerry Internet Service? Well, it is very simple. I spend most of my days sitting in front of computer. Perhaps around 10-12 hours a day so it will be such a waste if I pay IDR 180,000 for BIS by Telkomsel. BIS Lite is already proven useful for me.

Nowadays, I get informations mostly from Twitter. Here are few useful tweeter fellows that you might want to follow :
  • TMCPoldaMetro -> Jakarta's traffic information
  • OKEZ0NE -> One of the biggest news portal in Indonesia
  • kompasdotcom -> Biggest Newspaper in Indonesia
  • BlackBerry -> RIM's official Twitter
  • fp_pnp -> Forumponsel.com buying and selling Twitter. Never missed what you want to buy!
  • GilaPromoDotCom -> Informations about promotions, discounts, sale and whatsoever
  • jobsinindonesia -> do you want to work here? :)
  • GamepadMagazine -> a Jakarta Gamer's Twitter
  • ID_ARSENAL -> the official Arsenal FC - Indonesia supporter's Twitter
  • engadget -> its Engadget.com
  • boygeniusreport -> We're lucky that it's not about this boy, but it tweets about boy toys!
Okay, that was few of them on my list. Can you see how much information you'll get from Twitter? That's why I like to use it more than any social networking sites. Back to topic, to receive Twitter updates, we will use another third party helps. I always wonder why this third party is everywhere and the best part is they serve us for free! (horray for that.. for now...)

Here is the howtos :
  1. We will use the service by tweetbymail
  2. Simply just register your account
  3. Go to setting
  4. Click tab Updates and in "Sending updates to" type your email address and click "Set Updates"
  5. And to get all your @replies click tab Trackings, type your email address and click "Set Trackings"
  6. You should check your inbox because I use @live.com and @gmail.com and both of them filter the @twmail.com as spam or junk.
  7. Done.
Enjoy :)

Blackberry Pearl 8100 Themes

By default, I never like the BB_Dimension_Zen in Pearl screen and in the first hour that Pearl in my hands I already have the thoughts of finding a nice theme. Then I browse a few BlackBerry theme sites and found none I like until I remember a famous Chinese forums which also have a BlackBerry sub-forum and I visited them, search all posts related to Pearl and found these two decent themes.

First one is Bold Theme for BlackBerry Pearl

This one is very nice and you could get it here.

The second one is Storm replica which I don't really like it, but better than anything else out there. Here is the screenshots :

Using Google Sync

Ever encountering a hard time moving on to a new phone? I did. That was when moving to another OS platform such as Sony Ericsson -> Palm -> Symbian ->Windows Mobile -> Palm -> BlackBerry. Actually, it wasnt that hard if you are Microsoft Outlook user but I am not at some point and loss a lot of my contacts. Well it is now history!

Rapid technology invention by geeks out there brought us a new contact synchronization which is very easy to use called Google Sync. Yes the Californians are giving us the convenience to use their service for free as usual.

It works in this way :
  1. We backup all our contacts online to our Google Mail account. You could sync your phone or import a CSV file in the Google Webmail. I used the second.
  2. This one will be specific to your phone :
  • Android - c'mon you must be kidding! Android is also Google works so there's no way they won't automatically script the lines inside.
  • BlackBerry - open http://m.google.com/sync from the browser.
  • iPhone - read the setup here.
  • Nokia - read the setup here.
  • Windows Mobile - read the setup here.
  • Other phones support SyncML - see the setup here.
The pros :
  • It is stored online so we could access it everywhere and everywhen.
  • It is served by Google so I wont worry I'll loss my data. It's a Google!
  • It is practically unlimited.
  • It is easy and simple to use.
  • Easy to be organized.
The cons :
  • It is stored online so to sync, we gonna get charges except you are using free Wi-Fi connection.
  • It is stored by Google, so let's say that Google have millions contact of people on earth. Imagine what will happens if Google gone evil someday.
  • If you incidentally name your phone Titanic, you will see text saying "Titanic is syncing". (This one is only a joke I found in Twitter and not having any relations to Google Sync). Sorry to quote it Sir.
So there should be no reason to not change your device often rite? *wink*

BIS Lite and Twitter?

For those who lives outside Indonesia or may be Asia, the BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) Lite might seems unfamiliar. It is actually a downgrade BIS so that the cost could be reduced. There are several types of BIS Lite :
  • BIS Lite Email & Chat
  • BIS Lite Social Networking & Chat
What the BIS Lite covered are all activities which engage using native BlackBerry application such as Yahoo Messenger for Blackberry, Google Talk for BlackBerry, BlackBerry Messenger, Windows Live Messenger for Blackberry, Facebook for BlackBerry, and MySpace for BlackBerry.

Okay, at first I also got misguided by the "Social Networking" terms as for their term Twitter is not one of them because it doesn't include in or have the BlackBerry native application. But then I googled some clue and found these two methods of updating Twitter from your BIS Lite.

First, you need a Gtalk account which I believe most of the BlackBerry users will already have. Then we need to setup a 'TwitterSpy'. Here is a step-by-step howtos :
  1. Add twitterspy@jabber.org as your contact in Gtalk
  2. Wait for a moment until you got approved. It should be quick
  3. After that you could see a log on to your twitter account by typing this command 'twlogin' and logout using 'twlogout' (no quotes)
  4. If you logged on, you could post update to your twitter by using 'post' (no quote) command.
  5. That's it.
Second way of Twittering still involving Google Talk but this time will not be limited to Twitter. HelloTXT is the application we will used and you could use it to update status in around of 50 social networking sites! Ain't that cool? Here's the howtos :
  1. Register your account in here.
  2. Add im@hellotxt.com in your Google Talk account.
  3. Simply go to setting after that and enables "Update by Google Talk". Notice that there are a lot of options there. You could update via SMS, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, or email. Anyway to ease my life, I prefer to use Google Talk.
  4. After that you will be given the verification code. Send it to im@hellotxt.com from your Google Talk account.
  5. Now you could directly post to your twitter by sending im@hellotxt.com a message. No need any command.
And the most important thing is as long you have an access to your Gtalk, you could update your Twitter or Social Networking sites using any phones.

Hope this could be useful.

Windows Mobile SMS Year 2016 Bug

Found this on the mailing list. It might be useful for you.

There is a SMS bug for Windows Mobile Device during the 2010 welcoming. If you one of the people who got all SMS coming from the 'future' - year 2016, then this post might help you.

Here is what the bug will do in your phone :
  • All message received since 01/01/2010 will appeared as year 2016 message.
  • Will have effect on WM6.1, WM6.5 and some of non-Windows Mobile phone.
  • It is not because of the ROM so it will not be disappeared even if you reinstall or upgrade the OS
  • Only happened to a few service providers
  • Few vendors have notice this bug but there are no official response from them (such as HTC and LG)
This bug is happened perhaps because of the date-time misprogrammed function. The date time should have used Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) and hexadecimal. The BCD of 2010 is 010110 which is also 16 in hexadecimal numbers. This what makes a few phones interpret year 2010 becomes 2016.

At the moment, there is a temporary solution. All Windows Mobile user whom experience the bug could download this program and install it to your phone to fix it.
